Localization of spare parts production for large ship engines in India
09.09.2025
Projektbericht

Against this background, a project was initiated to promote the localization of spare parts for a selected engine from a strategically important customer.
The aim is to reduce import dependencies and specifically increase the share of Indian suppliers along the value chain.
challenge
Make in India” offers a promising opportunity to sustainably expand the market presence in the country.
At the same time, however, the program also poses significant challenges — in particular the protection of intellectual property and ensuring the confidentiality of products.
In addition to the technological requirements resulting from adapting to Indian use cases and operating conditions, legal aspects must be considered in particular to ensure that the intellectual property developed jointly over the entire product life cycle remains protected and intact.
If appropriate measures are not taken, there is not only the risk of losing existing sales and being excluded from future business opportunities, but there may also be conflicts of interest between European suppliers and the OEM.
Our Approach
- Systematic division of spare parts according to degree of complexity to ensure targeted implementation and efficient use of resources.
- Holistic management of the localization process, from supplier selection to testing and qualification measures to final approval of the components.
- Implementation of a monitoring system to manage project progress, comply with milestones and budget requirements, and identify potential risks at an early stage.
- Close cooperation with interdisciplinary interfaces in purchasing, development, quality and controlling to ensure smooth implementation of local spare parts procurement.
- Established network and deep expertise in the area of the Indian manufacturing ecosystem
The result
- 40% of spare parts were successfully located
- Localization resulted in cost savings of 22% and enabled efficient use of the Indian supply chain
- Successful order placement for the current project and protection of future projects of the OEM
- Building trust with customers, proven by the conclusion of long-term contract agreements
With the “Localization of M90 Spare Parts” project in India, we have set a decisive milestone for sustainable future viability and competitive strength on the Indian market.
